Note from the author of this Weblog: You have been reading the story of my dad as it was related to me. When I attached his photo just now, I realized that he might be somewhat embarassed by special attention being drawn to him in particular, when so many men and women served just as he did. And this is absolutely true. My dad is not only just one of the four McDowell brothers who enlisted following the attack on Pearl Harbor, but he is only one among tens of thousands who volunteered their lives to right the wrongs of others. This is simply what most young Americans did when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The entire nation was unified and civilians at home, young and old alike, were doing everything they could to support those who went to the fight.
A modest man like his own father, he leads a quiet life. In our family, boasting is viewed as something not to be admired; it is felt that kindnesses should be extended quietly and privately. My hope is not only to tell his story, but through it to convey to the reader a feeling for the lives and times of what is truly the Greatest Generation. I don't believe it is an overstatement to call them that.
