WINFIELD "BUZZ" GRANT MULKINS, II '65

Do you know what I remember most about Buzz? At the end of the basketball season, we were getting pictures made for the yearbook. Some of the guys were using chairs to jump off so that they could be "dunking" the ball in their picture. Buzz did that and landed wrong, breaking his ankle. But he wouldn't leave until he was in the team photo. If you look at the team photo, you can see that he did not have his typical smile, but more of a grimace. He is was in a lot of pain, but he didn't want to be left out of the picture.  Remembering Buzz by Jerry Ball '65

AUDREY ALICE PITTELLI BUCHERT

Audrey Alice Pittelli Buchert, born on October 13, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, to Catherine and Joseph Pittelli, passed into eternal life on December 23, 2012, at the age of 92. During WWII she traveled by train from Philadelphia to Tyler, Texas to marry her sweetheart, Anton Frank "Tony" Buchert on June 24, 1944, and began her life as the wife of a career Air Force officer. As such, she and her family had the opportunity to experience many cultures, including Europe and the Far East. She welcomed every new military assignment and taught her children to embrace new experiences with open minds and without prejudice. As a child of the depression she learned the value of hard work, frugality and honesty and instilled those values in her children. She was a living example of faith and love of humankind. Her father was a music teacher and played the clarinet in the John Philip Sousa marching band. She loved opera, and had a beautiful singing voice, which delighted her children at bed time. She studied in the Sogetsu school of Ikebana and was awarded a master's certificate there. For thirty years she was active in the San Antonio Conservation Society, serving twice as Treasurer of NIOSA. She was a community volunteer for many many years, helping to organize worthy charitable causes and working at city polling stations during elections. She was first and foremost, a mother. She made her home a safe haven for her husband and children and no matter where her husband was in the world, nothing made him happier than coming home to her. Beloved mother, wife, and friend her sweet disposition and gentle ways endeared her to all who knew her. In life, she delighted everyone with her quick wit and sense of humor. Her faith in God sustained her through a mighty battle with breast cancer in 1976 and the loss of her husband, Tony, in 2004. She loved her children fiercely and was a source of wisdom and comfort to them and to her grandchildren throughout her life. Her noble strength, loving ways, and gracious, gentle kindness influenced others for good and will be part of the wonderful legacy she leaves. She is survived by her three children, Toni L. Greece, Audrey A. "Dickie" O'Banion (Melbourne), and Scott A. Buchert; four grandchildren, Marc Greece, Michelle Bahjat (Sib) , Leslie O'Banion and Melbourne O'Banion III (Jamie), and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers, Robert Pittelli and George Buchhalter. Burial will be in the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with a graveside service to be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North will be on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. We extend sincere thanks to Vitas Hospice Care for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers the family requests a charitable donation be made in Audrey's name to Doctors without Borders.

******************************************************************************

For those of you who had the pleasure to know our sweet mother, it is with great sadness that she passed away December 23, 2012.
She graced this earth and us for 92 years, and we will miss her sweet spirit and sense of humor more than we could ever express.
She is now, once again, with daddy, whom she loved so very much and they will share Christmas with the Savior. There can be no greater joy than this. Our hearts are filled with the wonderful memories of her and we will cherish them always, with the certain knowledge that we will be together again in eternity some day.

Gloria,

Our mother passed away on December 23rd at the age of 92.  Her graveside service
will be on January 4th at Ft. Sam Houston, where our dad is buried and her
obituary will be in the paper this coming Sunday.  She was the most wonderful
mother, and our friends from Randolph will remember her delightful sense of
humor and her gracious and gentle nature.  She died peacefully, with Toni and I
at her side,  of natural causes due to age.  We are so grateful to have had her
with us for so many years and honestly can't imagine life without her .   I find
myself stopping to wonder if this is the same planet I was on last week when she
was here.

I know that some of our Randolph friends will remember her and I would
appreciate it if you'd post it on the web page if you have the time.

Thank you.....and Merry Christmas to you, Gloria.

JOYCE MARY NORTON

Joyce Mary Norton, the proper young English lady who fell in love with the lanky second lieutenant from Green Forest Arkansas, is once again reunited with her beloved Ross.
One of the last war brides to pass through Ellis Island, she threw herself into the life of a military spouse with enthusiastic devotion.
The consummate hostess, her roast beef and Yorkshire pudding was perfection. Mom was just as passionate about the Texas Aggies as she was about Wimbledon, and was indignant when they went to commercial just as the Fightin' Texas Aggie band stepped onto the field.

Joyce was an avid volunteer, devoting herself to the Red Cross, Windcrest Methodist Church, Family Services, Officers’ Wives Club, and Girl Scouts. Whatever needed to be done, she was the first in line to help.

Most of all, Mom was "the best Mom"; always there for her kids, in good times and hard times. She gave us a sense of security growing up that helped us become the adults we are today.

Joyce Mary was preceded by her husband of 65 years, Ross, and her brother, John. She is survived by her children Michael (Kay), Richard (Kathy), Elizabeth, and Susan; grandchildren Chris (Heather), Matt (Kristina), Ben (Becky), and Jeff (Stacey); great grandchildren Tyler, Braylon, Cade, Kaitlyn, Kaiya, Owen, and Finn. The family thanks our dear "sister" Dolores Gallegos, Miss Joyce's devoted angel and constant companion of 10 years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, San Antonio Area Chapter.

Viewing will be @ Porter Loring Mortuary (North location 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232, ph: 210- 495-8221) from 4 – 6 pm Sunday 12/16/12

CEMETERY WATCHMAN....

Submitted by Ben Croxton.... Class of '67
ben@bencroxton.com

Cemetery Watchman ...

My friend Kevin and I are volunteers at a National cemetery in Oklahoma and put in a few days a month in a 'slightly larger' uniform. Today had been a long, long day and I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's and have a cold one. Sneaking a look at my watch,

I saw the time, 16:55. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day.

Full dress was hot in the August sun Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high.

I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace.. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell.

I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: 'She's going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier, my hip hurts like hell and I'm ready to get out of here right now!' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.

Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it to Smokey's in time.

I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.

I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman's squint.

'Ma'am, may I assist you in any way?'

She took long enough to answer.

'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.'

'My pleasure, ma'am.'

(Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.)

She looked again. 'Marine, where were you stationed?'

' Vietnam , ma'am.. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.'

She looked at me closer. 'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I'll be as quick as I can.'

I lied a little bigger: 'No hurry, ma'am.'

She smiled and winked at me. 'Son, I'm 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off.. Let's get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman,  and I've a few Marines I'd like to see one more time..'

'Yes, ma 'am. At your service.'

She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flower bunches out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone.

She murmured something I couldn't quite make out.. The name on the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918.

She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek.

She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943.

She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone, Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944..

She paused for a second and more tears flowed. 'Two more, son, and we'll be done'

I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, ma'am.

Take your time.'

She looked confused.. 'Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.'

I pointed with my chin. 'That way, ma'am.'

'Oh!' she chuckled quietly. 'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.'

She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and the last on Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970.

She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn't make out and more tears flowed.

'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.'

Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?'

She paused. 'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephenwas my uncle, Stanleywas my husband,Larryand Darrelwere our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.'

She stopped! Whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I don't know.

She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully.

I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car.

'Get to the 'Out' gate quick.. I have something I've got to do.'

Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us down the service road fast. We beat her.

She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.

'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost.

Follow my lead.' I humped it across the drive to the other post.

When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: 'TehenHut!

Present Haaaarms!'

I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye--full dress attention and a salute that would make his DI proud.

She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice far beyond the realm of most.

I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac.

Instead of 'The End,' just think of 'Taps.'

As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: 'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas.

Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.'

Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.

AMEN

Haynes Madden Baumgardner Jr. '65

Col. Haynes Madden Baumgardner, Jr., U.S.A.F. (Ret.) went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, October 3, 2011. After a courageous 5 month battle against lymphoma, he passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side. He was 64 years old. Haynes was born in Matador, Texas, a town that was forever home to him. He grew up in an Air Force family and traveled the world. Haynes graduated from what is now known as Texas State University in 1969. It was there that he met the love of his life, Cheryl Green. After graduation, they married and like his father before him, Haynes joined the Air Force. He retired as a Colonel in 1994 after proudly serving his country for 25 years. After his retirement, Haynes began a second career as a school teacher. He retired from that profession in 2010. Haynes loved the outdoors and spent his free time working in the yard he cherished. Fish feared him and his family adored him. He was a life member of the North American Hunting Club, North American Fishing Club and the NRA. He enjoyed volunteering on his tractor for his neighborhood association and was an active member of the Yarddogs at Northeast Bible Church. Whatever he did, he mastered. He was preceded in death by his mother, Myrna. Haynes is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Natalie; his son, Trey and his wife, Lou; his grandsons, Madden and Finn; his father, Haynes Sr.; his brother, Jan and numerous extended family members. Haynes leaves behind wonderful memories and countless examples of what it means to be a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. The family wishes to thank VistaCare Hospice at 1911 Corporate Drive, Ste 104, San Marcos, TX 78666. They cared so tenderly for Haynes. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 10, 2011, from 5:00PM until 9:00PM, at Schertz Funeral Home (FM 3009, Schertz, (210) 658-9224). The Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at 9:00AM, at the Northeast Bible Church, 19185 FM 2252, Garden Ridge, Texas 78266. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with United States Air Force Honors.  You are invited to sign the electronic guestbook at http://www.schertzfuneralhome.com/

MEMORIAL DAY MEMORY BY Jerry Ball '65

Hi, Gloria,

Just a quick note to mark this occasion.

Our local community of Boerne put out 596 American flags denoting Kendall County's military deceased. From WWI there are 94; WWII 315; Korea 65; Vietnam 34; Desert Storm 3; Iraq 1; and 27 combined from the Mexican War, Civil War and the Spanish-American War.

I always remember one of the guys I served with, Dex Florence, on Memorial Day. You may remember that I mentioned two friends from my Vietnam days, Dexter Florence and John Matthews, in my retirement ceremony in Chapel 1 at Randolph. On that occasion, I read the description of Dexter's last mission:

“On 26 October 1972 1LT Dexter Bush Florence, pilot, and SSG Keven Zane Goodno, observer, were on a scout mission in an OH-6A Loach. While hovering at tree-top level, a command-detonated mine blew the OH-6 out of the air. SSG Goodno was killed instantly, while 1LT Florence was seriously injured. He was evacuated to Japan where he died on 29 October of injuries received.”

I remember being incensed when John wrote to me about how he, still recovering from his own war wounds, was mistreated in America (San Francisco, to be particular) while escorting Dex's body home.

Today, at 2100 Central Daylight Time, I will lift a glass in memory of a fallen comrade, Dexter Bush Florence, and the many others who have lost their lives in the never ending battle for freedom. If you get this e-mail in time and if your schedule and situation allows you to participate, I'd be honored if you'd share in this virtual "toast", too.

As always on Memorial Day, I rejoice to be alive and to be able to toast those who are not because of their commitment to our Nation.

God bless.

Jerry

MEMORIAL DAY 2011 - we remember them

SOME GAVE ALL .................

This slide show consists of photos taken at a formal dinner at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA.  It is a beautiful presentation of the honor, commitment and pride today's heroes share with yesterday's.  If you know a Marine or a soldier of any branch of the Military (of any age) make sure he or she sees this. Wouldn't hurt if all other Americans saw it too!

Linda Tucker Prater Love never dies and isn't it wonderful that being in Christ we will be with each other forever. Until then may God bring to your mind precious memories of your dear brother and my dear friend. Prayers for you and family.

Dennis Taylor Lynn, so very sorry to hear the news of Terry. He is in good hands with good friends.

Jerry Massey My sympathies, Lynn, prayers!

Bonnie Gallogly Oh Lynn, I am so sorry to hear this news. He has had such a long difficult struggle. My prayers are with all of you.

Chuck Elsey We are only sad because we will miss them. Only for a short while and we would surely not wish them back from paradise. I will be thinking of you & your family. RIP Terry.

John Molleston Lynn, I am so sorry to hear the sad news of Terry's passing. My sympathies to you and Terry's family. Thank your for posting the wonderful picture of you and Terry. The love and family pride are just radiant in your smiles.

Benjamin Croxton Terry was a wonderful human being ... Please pass our prayers to the family ...

Mark Pierini (Bayne) Terry Lee, my fond memories of our Class of ’67 always included you. Rest in Peace.

Dennis Taylor Terry, thanks for the fun we shared at RHS, especially during track...say hello to Coach Mickler, and Teddy "Gone" Gosline"......RHS is putting another good team together, run 44 trap until the cows come home "Coach Mickler".....see you on the other side Terry, RIP!

Charlie LeViseur  Coach English was perhaps the finest role model for ALL high school coaches, being tough enough to mold young boys into fine, respectable men. I witnessed this every year our fotball teams made it to playoffs and even State. I never worked directly with Coach Scott, but he even knew who I was just from my interactions with him from my years in the marching band. The last time I saw him was at the 2001 reunion, and he looked the same as he did in 1980 when I graduated. I am skocked and saddened to hear he is gone - he will truly be missed but not forgotten.

Michael Bernard Sykes  Coach English was probably the the hard nose coach of the bunch of Mickler, Scott, and Cannon. he was rough and gruff and put us through it. I remember running to the pits and back while he rode a bike and laughed at us. A physical specimen, it was a shame to hear about his unfortunate and freak accident that was the start of his demise. That guy made me tell myself, I gotta be tougher than I am. Rest in Peace Coach English.

Hi Gloria, i would like to post something. As you may remember Terry was the quarterback behind me on the football team. Therefore, I would like to just say this, "Regretfully, I haven't seen Terry since I left Randolph AFB back in 1965. I was hoping to see him at the reunion we had a few years back, but alas, he was too ill to travel. However, I remember him as if it were yesterday. Terry was behind me on the QB depth chart, me being an senior and he a sophomore. I can remember he was always trying to get my job, the rascal! I can still see his ever smiling cheerful face, hustling, hard working; the epitome of a Ro-Hawk football player, and AF "Brat". I am deeply saddened that such a fine man has left us, and left his loving family. He will be missed, but he will always be remembered by me, and I am sure, his Ro-Hawk family. Art Nigro.

TRIBUTE TO TERRY ENGLISH Coach Scott

by Don Scott on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 12:17pm.I did know Terry as a player. He graduated before I got to R in the fall of 67.The first I heard of Terry Coach Mickler told this story. As he aways did on the last night of football camp he took the team to Lubys for dinner. He had a limit on what they could spend on their meal. After the meal Terry approached C M and stated "Here's a nickle I got an extra milk.Honesty only 1 of Terrys atributes. Later CM took us to watch Terry and Bucky A play at Rice.On the first kickoff T was full speed ahead mutilate mode.He zeroed in on 1 opponent and crushed him.Full speed ahead total commitment that was Terry. After Terry graduated from Rice CM hired him to coach at R.He worked varsity & jv.His 72 team was 9-1.He was my jv basketball coach and in 76 his team went 11-7.In 77 my entire varsity gaduated and his jv was now my varsity. We won district. I give T much of the credit.T loved to go 1 on 1 bb with former Rice team mate Donnie Johnson. You would think it was the Super Bowl it so football like.Win the only result! We scouted a couple of playoff games a long distance from SA and stayed the night.A couple of Kool-Aids in the motel bar and you get to know a man really well.Terry left R and became a head coach & assistant at other schools. His tragic injury was a shock to us all.I did not live in SA so I talked to him on the phone. I am not sure he knew me.Years later a Rohawk told me his wife Lucy was wanting help with his past memory.I was introduced to Facebook and related some stories he did not remember.I sent a pic of the R coaches on the River Walk and he stated that pic was on the wall of every house he ever lived in.(pic on my FB) I sent one of the 1st copies of my book and he enjoyed reading it.He asked Lucy "Do you think C S would recommend me for a coaching job?"He will always be a hero of mine. Coaching was his passion & he was great at it.All sports, total dedication, determination,&winning were instilled in all his players.

Kasey and Kyle,
You are never far from my thoughts and prayers in this difficult time. It is not easy for any family to lose one of their parents, and you should know that your father was one of the kindest people I have ever known. His passing is a huge loss to you and everyone who knew him, and the only comfort that I am able to provide is that he enriched so many people's lives that he will never be forgotten. I have so many fond memories with your family growing up. He will be sorely missed but those that knew him will know that their lives were enriched by the experience. I am glad that I had the opportunity to know him. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family.
Love Always, Kelly & Jason Burch - Wylie, TX - Family Friend Apr 07, 2011

My love and thoughts are with my best friend Kasey and her family during this difficult time. Kasey, father, Ted was a wonderful, loving, funny, and considerate man. I have fond memories of Ted while being over at the Gosline home and I considered him to be like my second dad. I know how much he loved his children Kasey and Kyle and he was so proud of them both.

I found this poem that I wanted to share with everyone:

When you feel Lonely
When a person you love passes away
Look to the night sky on a clear day.
The star that to you, appears to be bright,
Will be your loved one,

Looking upon you during the night.
The lights of heaven are what shows through
As your loved one watches all that you do.
When you feel lonely for the one that you love,
Look to the Heavens in the night sky above.

It is with deepest sorrow that I am hearing of Ted's passing. I have known Ted for over 30 years, through business, but also as a friend. We shared many memories as we both were of the same age and both proud to be military brats. Ted was always with a story to tell and a laugh to share. He will be truly missed....

Words cannot express how much I will miss my Uncle Teddy. Whenever I got the chance to visit with him, he would always keep me laughing with a new joke or some story about him and my dad growing up. Time is so fleeting and I wish I could have had so much more of it with Uncle Ted. As fast as we both talked, I'm sure we were at least a day ahead in conversation of the rest of the world. My memories of him are filled with joy and happiness. He was always quick with a hug and a jab at the side. He laughed the loudest and there is definitley a silence now here on Earth. But I know my Uncle Ted is somewhere above, giving God quite the chuckle. My thoughts and prayers are with Kasey and Kyle and all those who loved this wonderful man.  May you rest in peace Uncle Teddy. Much love. -Kristin

Ted you were a wonderful father, son, uncle and friend. We had some good and bad times over the years. But more than that we were blessed with two wonderful children. I thank you for that and the good memories. You will be missed and may you rest in peace. God be with you.  Pam

Note from the author of this Weblog:

You have been reading the story of my dad as it was related to me. When I attached his photo just now, I realized that he might be somewhat embarassed by special attention being drawn to him in particular, when so many men and women served just as he did. And this is absolutely true. My dad is not only just one of the four McDowell brothers who enlisted following the attack on Pearl Harbor, but he is only one among tens of thousands who volunteered their lives to right the wrongs of others. This is simply what most young Americans did when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The entire nation was unified and civilians at home, young and old alike, were doing everything they could to support those who went to the fight.

A modest man like his own father, he leads a quiet life. In our family, boasting is viewed as something not to be admired; it is felt that kindnesses should be extended quietly and privately. My hope is not only to tell his story, but through it to convey to the reader a feeling for the lives and times of what is truly the Greatest Generation. I don't believe it is an overstatement to call them that.
