COL. EUGENE BOUNDS SISK

Colonel Eugene Bounds Sisk, United States Air Force (Ret.) died Sunday, May 6, at the age of 95. 

Preceding him in death were his wife of 56 years, Betty Sisk, and his sisters Frances Sisk and Margaret Croissant.   Gene is survived by son Lindy Sisk and fiancée Penny Harris, daughters Judy Sisk Millspaugh and Cathy Sisk, grandson Sid Millspaugh, IV and wife Martyna, and his loving companion Muriel Littlejohn.

A practicing attorney until two years ago, Gene was born in Houston and was a graduate of Rice University and the Georgetown University School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Law Journal and received the Francis E. Lucey medal for the highest academic average in his graduating class.  Widely known for his intelligence and integrity, Gene proudly served 30 years in the Air Force, most recently as Staff Judge Advocate, Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base.  He joined the service in 1939 and during World War II was primarily stationed on the island of Morotai, where he served as radar bombing operator and aircraft observer. He flew many missions, including two of the longest strike missions ever flown by B-24’s in the Pacific Theater.  He retired in 1969.  Among his military decorations and awards are the American Defense Service Medal,  Army Commendation Medal,  World War II Victory Medal,  Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal,  Philippine Liberation Ribbon,  Korean Service Medal,  United Nations Service Medal,  National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star,  Air Force Longevity Service Award with six Oak Leaf Clusters,  Air Medal,  Combat Readiness Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster,  Air Force Commendation Award Medal,  Legion of Merit,  and Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster. 

Upon his retirement, Gene opened a law practice in Universal City with John Van Voorhis, a fellow retired Judge Advocate.   He served his community as Universal City’s Municipal Judge, as an active Rotary member and later a Kiwanis Member, as well as President of many clubs and boards.   He was also an avid sports fan and golfer.   Gene lived the last sixteen years at the Army Residence Community, the staff of which took excellent care of Betty and Gene in their final years.   Gene was a man of high intellect and high morals.  He and his devilish sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Samuel Lafayette Futch, Jr.

Samuel Lafayette Futch, Jr. 88, courageously made his final safe flight home on April 28, 2012 to be with his Lord and Savior. Sam was born on September 29, 1923 in Barnum, Texas to Samuel L. Futch Sr. and Bessie Williams Hughes. Sam was preceded in death by his first wife Claudia Mai and second wife Lou Beth (Betty). He was also preceded in death by his grand-daughter Shanna Marie.


Sam is survived by his Sister Bessie Myrtice Clamon , in Chester Texas. Sam is also survived by his children Ron Futch and wife Donna, Wayne Futch and wife Donna, Steve Futch and wife Sandye and Sue Carol Dacquisto and husband Tony. Sam left a legacy of grand-children and step grand-children; Tiersa, Shanna Michelle, Veronica, Beth, Adam Wayne, Misty Lynn, Bill and Jason and great-grandchildren; Kristin, Moses, Breann, Gerron, Gen’a, Kendon, Lilly, Graydon, Morgan, Cade, Jackson, Taylor Lynn and Bryan and numerous step great grand-children.

Sam served our Country during WWII, Berlin Air Lift, Korea and Viet Nam in the United States Air Force. He retired after 25 years as a Senior Master Sergeant and was regarded as one of the best aircraft mechanics. During WWII, he was responsible for a P-47 – “The Fighting Gator” that flew 200 missions without a mechanical failure.

Graveside visitation will be at 10:30am and graveside services will be held at 11:30am on Saturday May 5th 2012 at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Drive Houston, Texas 77055. Flowers may be delivered to Waltrip Funeral Home 1415 Campbell Rd. Houston, Tx 77055 prior to 5pm on Friday, May 4th.

BRADLEY SWANSON - Class of 1981

BRADLEY MUNRO SWANSON entered this world September 22, 1962 at Williams Air Force Base, in Chandler AZ, and left us on March 13, 2012 at his home in Texas. Brad graduated from Randolph AFB High School (Class of 1981) where he was an all-district and all-city football player. He still holds three Randolph Rohawk gridiron records. He attended Texas State and Stephen F. Austin Universities. Brad was an avid outdoorsman who spent many years as an outfitter and guide conducting hunting and fishing expeditions through his business, Hunters Choice, throughout South Texas. He is survived by his wife Cassandra Hash Swanson, and her sons, Daniel and David. He is also survived by parents George Pape and Elizabeth Joie Swanson and Lewis Larry Tew; by brother Brent Lewis Swanson, wife Shannon Lee and nieces Kendall Elizabeth and Hailey Harper; and by brother Pape Swanson, wife Natalie Ann and niece Taylor Ann. Brad was a best friend, with unending enthusiasm and a fountain of giving. Private family services will be held March 31st.. Place to be announced.

Cemetery Watchman ...

My friend Kevin and I are volunteers at a National cemetery in Oklahoma and put in a few days a month in a 'slightly larger' uniform. Today had been a long, long day and I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's and have a cold one. Sneaking a look at my watch,

I saw the time, 16:55. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day.

Full dress was hot in the August sun Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high.

I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace.. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell.

I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: 'She's going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier, my hip hurts like hell and I'm ready to get out of here right now!' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.

Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it to Smokey's in time.

I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.

I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman's squint.

'Ma'am, may I assist you in any way?'

She took long enough to answer.

'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.'

'My pleasure, ma'am.'

(Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.)

She looked again. 'Marine, where were you stationed?'

' Vietnam , ma'am.. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.'

She looked at me closer. 'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I'll be as quick as I can.'

I lied a little bigger: 'No hurry, ma'am.'

She smiled and winked at me. 'Son, I'm 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off.. Let's get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman,  and I've a few Marines I'd like to see one more time..'

'Yes, ma 'am. At your service.'

She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flower bunches out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone.

She murmured something I couldn't quite make out.. The name on the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918.

She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek.

She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943.

She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone, Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944..

She paused for a second and more tears flowed. 'Two more, son, and we'll be done'

I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, ma'am.

Take your time.'

She looked confused.. 'Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.'

I pointed with my chin. 'That way, ma'am.'

'Oh!' she chuckled quietly. 'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.'

She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and the last on Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970.

She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn't make out and more tears flowed.

'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.'

Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?'

She paused. 'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephenwas my uncle, Stanleywas my husband,Larryand Darrelwere our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.'

She stopped! Whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I don't know.

She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully.

I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car.

'Get to the 'Out' gate quick.. I have something I've got to do.'

Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us down the service road fast. We beat her.

She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.

'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost.

Follow my lead.' I humped it across the drive to the other post.

When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: 'TehenHut!

Present Haaaarms!'

I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye--full dress attention and a salute that would make his DI proud.

She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice far beyond the realm of most.

I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac.

Instead of 'The End,' just think of 'Taps.'

As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: 'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas.

Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.'

Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.

Mom passed away last Saturday night with the Wile boys, sister Michele and dad by her side. She lived a full life of almost 94 years with 66 of it with my dad. Dad is doing well despite the loss and the family will be together next week at the visitation, service and interment. Some of you will remember her as the "jam" lady of Universal City as she used to make colorful baggy swim trunks for the kids at the "O" club swimming pool..

Victorine (Vicky) Josephine Wile of Cedar Park, Texas, went to be with the Lord on 3 March 2012. Vicky was born in Angleur, Belgium. On New Year’s Eve 1945 Vicky met a young US Army soldier, Albert L. Wile, whom she would fall in love with to become her forever faithful companion of sixty-six years. Vicky married Albert on 14 Dec 1946, left her beloved family in Belgium and arrived in the United States in April 1947 to be with her husband Al. Vicky became mom to 6 children and served as an Air Force Wife. The family ended up in San Antonio, Texas for her husband’s final military assignment at Randolph AFB. With the children all a little older she took on her lifetime dream and became a Master Fitter/Alterations Seamstress at Joske’s, Frost Brothers, and Lillie Rubin’s. Vicky loved life, her husband, her children and their families, as well as her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

A visitation will be held Wednesday 14 March 2012 from 5P.M. -7P.M. at Colonial Funeral Home, Universal City, TX and services will be held at the Chapel of Cornerstone Church, 18755 Stone Oak Parkway, San Antonio, Texas at 11:30 A.M on 15 March. Graveside services and interment will be at Friday, March 16 at 9 A.M. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Vicky was preceded in death by her beloved youngest son Gregory and granddaughter Laurie. Col. Lawrence "Jack" Turnipseed, USAF

Col. Lawrence "Jack" Turnipseed, USAF (Ret), a resident of Air Force Village, San Antonio, TX passed away December 13, 2011. Born to Lawrence L. Turnipseed, Sr. and Annie Lou Mayhew on February 24, 1920 in Aliceville, Alabama, he was a long time resident of the Lake Travis, TX area. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Zelema (Zee), Daughter Carol Ann Haberle and her husband David of Jacksonville, TX, Son Larry Turnipseed and his wife Crystal of Lakeway, TX, Granddaughter May Ann Burnett of NY, NY, Grandsons Fred Haberle of Waco, Joshua Stark and Jared Turnipseed of Austin and Great Granddaughters Evie Burnett, Dylan and Holly Haberle. A member of the Army's 1st OCS class, he served with distinction in N. Africa, Sicily, Italy, Belgium, landed on Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and other numerous engagements before transitioning to the Air Force in 1947. He was very active in his church, instrumental in creating the Hudson Bend VFD and, as a member of the school board, led the effort that established the Lake Travis ISD. Col. Turnipseed is preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters and two brothers. He always had time and a kind word for anyone regardless of their station, lived his life with faith, honor, integrity and loved his family. A great old soldier has earned a peaceful corner of Heaven and his passing has left a hole that will never be filled. Visitation will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough, San Antonio, on Wednesday, December 21st from 6 pm to 8 pm. A memorial service will be held on December 22nd at Air Force Village I Chapel at 10 am. Graveside services will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on December 22nd at 2 pm. JOHN WINSTON MOSELEY

Lt. Col. John Winston Moseley, USAF (Ret.) passed away on October 25, 2011 at the age of 56. Col. Moseley's Air Force career spanned 20 years with Audio Visual Service/Combat Camera, Training with Industry in motion picture at WGN Chicago, The Inspector General, Squadron Command and Communications Executive Officer assignments. John was an avid golfer, enthusiastic snow skier, accomplished TV documentary producer and a loving, devoted husband and father. His legacy to his family is his positive energetic outlook on life, love of family and intense patriotism. John is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Shelley; daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Adam Rice and his imminently due first granddaughter. Haynes Madden Baumgardner Jr. '65

Col. Haynes Madden Baumgardner, Jr., U.S.A.F. (Ret.) went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, October 3, 2011. After a courageous 5 month battle against lymphoma, he passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side. He was 64 years old. Haynes was born in Matador, Texas, a town that was forever home to him. He grew up in an Air Force family and traveled the world. Haynes graduated from what is now known as Texas State University in 1969. It was there that he met the love of his life, Cheryl Green. After graduation, they married and like his father before him, Haynes joined the Air Force. He retired as a Colonel in 1994 after proudly serving his country for 25 years. After his retirement, Haynes began a second career as a school teacher. He retired from that profession in 2010. Haynes loved the outdoors and spent his free time working in the yard he cherished. Fish feared him and his family adored him. He was a life member of the North American Hunting Club, North American Fishing Club and the NRA. He enjoyed volunteering on his tractor for his neighborhood association and was an active member of the Yarddogs at Northeast Bible Church. Whatever he did, he mastered. He was preceded in death by his mother, Myrna. Haynes is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Natalie; his son, Trey and his wife, Lou; his grandsons, Madden and Finn; his father, Haynes Sr.; his brother, Jan and numerous extended family members. Haynes leaves behind wonderful memories and countless examples of what it means to be a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. HAROLD ARMOLD, JR. Class of '65

   Harold Arthur Parks Armold, Jr., 64, of Baltimore, Maryland, died of a heart attack on April 26, 2011.  He was born December 18, 1946, in Junction City, Kansas, the son of Col. Harold A.P. Armold and Dorothy Scholl Armold, RN. He was the oldest of 4 siblings. He graduated from Randolph High School, Universal City, Texas in 1965. He graduated from the University of Houston with degrees in Electronic Technology and Electrical Engineering. He worked as an electrical engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Baltimore. He became licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Maryland. He is survived by siblings, Carolyn Torrence and husband Rick; his brothers Edward Armold and wife Kate, Norman Armold and wife Kathy; and his nephew Jacob. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Zachary Armold. His burial will be at Indian Hills Cemetery, Chapman, Kansas, handled by the Londeen Funeral Chapel.

MEMORIAL DAY MEMORY BY Jerry Ball '65

Just a quick note to mark this occasion.

Our local community of Boerne put out 596 American flags denoting Kendall County's military deceased. From WWI there are 94; WWII 315; Korea 65; Vietnam 34; Desert Storm 3; Iraq 1; and 27 combined from the Mexican War, Civil War and the Spanish-American War.

I always remember one of the guys I served with, Dex Florence, on Memorial Day. You may remember that I mentioned two friends from my Vietnam days, Dexter Florence and John Matthews, in my retirement ceremony in Chapel 1 at Randolph. On that occasion, I read the description of Dexter's last mission:

“On 26 October 1972 1LT Dexter Bush Florence, pilot, and SSG Keven Zane Goodno, observer, were on a scout mission in an OH-6A Loach. While hovering at tree-top level, a command-detonated mine blew the OH-6 out of the air. SSG Goodno was killed instantly, while 1LT Florence was seriously injured. He was evacuated to Japan where he died on 29 October of injuries received.”

I remember being incensed when John wrote to me about how he, still recovering from his own war wounds, was mistreated in America (San Francisco, to be particular) while escorting Dex's body home.

Today, at 2100 Central Daylight Time, I will lift a glass in memory of a fallen comrade, Dexter Bush Florence, and the many others who have lost their lives in the never ending battle for freedom. If you get this e-mail in time and if your schedule and situation allows you to participate, I'd be honored if you'd share in this virtual "toast", too.

As always on Memorial Day, I rejoice to be alive and to be able to toast those who are not because of their commitment to our Nation.

Terry Lee English, 62, of Barnesville, Georgia, died Thursday, May 12th, 2011 at the Atlanta Medical Center.

Terry was a native of Upson County. He was a graduate of Rice University and later earned his Masters Degree at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX. He taught and coached in the San Antonio, TX area for 34 years. He was a former football player and coach in the Randolph Independent School District in Texas (Randolph AFB) and coached under Bob Mickler.

Terry attended First Baptist Church in Barnesville. He was preceded in death by his father, James Everette English. Terry is survived by his wife, Lucy K. English; his mother, Doris Anne English of Wetumpka, AL; four daughters, Julie (Omar) Hernandez of Arlington, TX, Paige Zaragoza of San Antonio, TX, Sara English of Barnesville and Katie (Nate) Monroe of Asheville, NC; two sons, Michael English and Kerry Kinser, both of San Antonio; two sisters, Judith Lynn (Robert L.) Sutton of Wetumpka, AL and Laura (Charles) Huggins of Barnesville; an uncle-brother, Jessie McKoy of Union City, NJ; and five grandchildren.

Charlie LeViseur  Coach English was perhaps the finest role model for ALL high school coaches, being tough enough to mold young boys into fine, respectable men. I witnessed this every year our fotball teams made it to playoffs and even State. I never worked directly with Coach Scott, but he even knew who I was just from my interactions with him from my years in the marching band. The last time I saw him was at the 2001 reunion, and he looked the same as he did in 1980 when I graduated. I am skocked and saddened to hear he is gone - he will truly be missed but not forgotten.

Michael Bernard Sykes  Coach English was probably the the hard nose coach of the bunch of Mickler, Scott, and Cannon. he was rough and gruff and put us through it. I remember running to the pits and back while he rode a bike and laughed at us. A physical specimen, it was a shame to hear about his unfortunate and freak accident that was the start of his demise. That guy made me tell myself, I gotta be tougher than I am. Rest in Peace Coach English.

Hi Gloria, i would like to post something. As you may remember Terry was the quarterback behind me on the football team. Therefore, I would like to just say this, "Regretfully, I haven't seen Terry since I left Randolph AFB back in 1965. I was hoping to see him at the reunion we had a few years back, but alas, he was too ill to travel. However, I remember him as if it were yesterday. Terry was behind me on the QB depth chart, me being an senior and he a sophomore. I can remember he was always trying to get my job, the rascal! I can still see his ever smiling cheerful face, hustling, hard working; the epitome of a Ro-Hawk football player, and AF "Brat". I am deeply saddened that such a fine man has left us, and left his loving family. He will be missed, but he will always be remembered by me, and I am sure, his Ro-Hawk family. Art Nigro.

by Don Scott on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 12:17pm.I did know Terry as a player.He graduated before I got to R in the fall of 67.The first I heard of Terry Coach Mickler told this story.As he aways did on the last night of football camp he took the team to Lubys for dinner. He had a limit on what they could spend on their meal.After the meal Terry approached C M and stated "Here's a nickle I got an extra milk.Honesty only 1 of Terrys atributes. Later CM took us to watch Terry and Bucky A play at Rice.On the first kickoff T was full speed ahead mutilate mode.He zeroed in on 1 opponent and crushed him.Full speed ahead total commitment that was Terry.After Terry graduated from Rice CM hired him to coach at R.He worked varsity & jv.His 72 team was 9-1.He was my jv basketball coach and in 76 his team went 11-7.In 77 my entire varsity gaduated and his jv was now my varsity.We won district. I give T much of the credit.T loved to go 1 on 1 bb with former Rice team mate Donnie Johnson.You would think it was the Super Bowl it so football like.Win the only result!We scouted a couple of playoff games a long distance from SA and stayed the night.A couple of Kool-Aids in the motel bar and you get to know a man really well.Terry left R and became a head coach & assistant at other schools.His tragic injury was a shock to us all.I did not live in SA so I talked to him on the phone. I am not sure he knew me.Years later a Rohawk told me his wife Lucy was wanting help with his past memory.I was introduced to Facebook and related some stories he did not remember.I sent a pic of the R coaches on the River Walk and he stated that pic was on the wall of every house he ever lived in.(pic on my FB) I sent one of the 1st copies of my book and he enjoyed reading it.He asked Lucy "Do you think C S would recommend me for a coaching job?"He will always be a hero of mine. Coaching was his passion & he was great at it.All sports,total dedication,determination,&winning were instilled in all his players.

RUTH A. McGILL

RUTH A. McGILL, 84, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011. She was born November 27, 1926 in Louisville to the late John and Lillian Brown. She was a Catholic by faith, a loving mother, very outgoing, had many friends and was an avid golfer.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Col. Douglas J. McGill Sr., USAF Retired, who was one of the four founders of the KY Air National Guard. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Maxwell, Russell, Jack, Mary and Dorothy.

She is survived by her children, Douglas J. McGill Jr. (Cheryl), of Parrish, FL, Sharon A. (McGill)Steinhauser, of Louisville, Tim J. McGill (Jennifer), of Hermosa Beach, CA and Kevin McGill (Kathy), of Bowling Green, KY. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Megan, Erin, Sean, Maura and Caitlin; and five great-grandchildren.

She will be laid to rest with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Ratterman Bros. Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road was entrusted with arrangements.

Memorial gifts in the form of contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .

B. J. (Burleigh John) Smith - Class of '66

B. J. (Burleigh John) Smith, 62, of Dallas passed away on March 29, 2011 from complications due to liver cancer. He was born in Shreveport, LA to the late B. C. (Bernard Cyril) and Gwendolyn Smith. B. J. worked 20 years for Cinemark Theaters as a film buyer before retiring in early 2010. He served as an officer in the Air Force achieving the rank of Captain while serving as a B-52 navigator/bombadier from 1970 – 1976.

He is survived by Dennis Bellotto, his partner of 31 years, sister Lynn Norton and family of Flower Mound, brother Barney Smith and family of San Antonio, and cherished cat Lance.

B. J. had a very outgoing and uplifting personality. He never met a stranger. Hobbies and interests included singing with the Turtle Creek Chorale 11 years, movies, traveling, cooking, enjoying food and wine with friends.

Gosline, Earl Stanley “Ted” III, 58, died Sunday, April 3, 2011. Visitation will be held at Restland Funeral Home on Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 6-8pm. Services will be held in Restland Wildwood Chapel on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 3 pm.

He was a graduate of University of North Texas and was employed by Cardinal Metals in Irving TX. He was a loving father, proud grandfather and was loved dearly by many friends and family.

He is survived by parents Jane and Lt. Col. Earl Gosline, Jr ; daughter Kasey Gosline Whitten and son-in-law Jay Whitten and grandson Jack Ryder Whitten of Lubbock, TX; son Kyle Gosline of Houston, TX; brother Lt. Col. Words cannot express how much I will miss my Uncle Teddy. Whenever I got the chance to visit with him, he would always keep me laughing with a new joke or some story about him and my dad growing up. Time is so fleeting and I wish I could have had so much more of it with Uncle Ted. As fast as we both talked, I'm sure we were at least a day ahead in conversation of the rest of the world. My memories of him are filled with joy and happiness. He was always quick with a hug and a jab at the side. He laughed the loudest and there is definitley a silence now here on Earth. But I know my Uncle Ted is somewhere above, giving God quite the chuckle. My thoughts and prayers are with Kasey and Kyle and all those who loved this wonderful man.  May you rest in peace Uncle Teddy. Much love. -Kristin

FRANCES B. DAILEY

Frances B. Dailey, 94, long time resident of Universal City, Texas, passed away on March 21, 2011. She was born on October 18, 1916, to John and Elizabeth Buchan. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Edward S. Dailey and her ten brothers and sisters.


She is survived by her daughters Mary Cauffiel and Kathleen Norton, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dailey worked for her country for 32 years in Civil Service as a secretary where she received many commendations for "Secretary of the Year." After retirement, "Miss Fran" (as she was known by all) volunteered for 14 years as a receptionist at the Randolph AFB Chapel Center 40 hours a week. She was a recipient of the "Spirit of Four Chaplains Award" for her outstanding service.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City, Texas, at 1:00 PM followed by interment at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

You have been reading the story of my dad as it was related to me. When I attached his photo just now, I realized that he might be somewhat embarassed by special attention being drawn to him in particular, when so many men and women served just as he did. And this is absolutely true. My dad is not only just one of the four McDowell brothers who enlisted following the attack on Pearl Harbor, but he is only one among tens of thousands who volunteered their lives to right the wrongs of others. This is simply what most young Americans did when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The entire nation was unified and civilians at home, young and old alike, were doing everything they could to support those who went to the fight.

A modest man like his own father, he leads a quiet life. In our family, boasting is viewed as something not to be admired; it is felt that kindnesses should be extended quietly and privately. My hope is not only to tell his story, but through it to convey to the reader a feeling for the lives and times of what is truly the Greatest Generation. I don't believe it is an overstatement to call them that.

MARVIN PORTER - MATH TEACHER

Our dear friend and math teacher, Marvin Porter, passed away on Monday, Dec 20, 2010. He had been in ill health for a long time .... but he still had his spirit and sense of humor. I traded correspondence with him for the last 40 years and we had several LONG conversations on the phone. He could talk!!! The one thing he said most often was that his years teaching at RHS were the most fun he ever had. He really loved us kids. I know several of you contacted him over the years and told him what a great teacher he was and he appreciated that tremendously.

Marvin C. Porter Jr., age 85, passed away on December 21, 2010. He was born on November 21, 1925 in Noxapater, MS. He was a Veteran in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He was a teacher and taught in various school districts and retired with the Randolph I.S.D. as a math teacher.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin C. Porter, Sr. & Julia M. Therrell; sister, Therrell Porter.

He is survived by his 3 sisters, Frances Goslin & her husband William T. Jr., Juanita Hutton, Julia M. Bowen & her husband Jimmy; numerous nieces and nephews that called him "Uncle Brother".

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 27, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with the Funeral Service to follow at 12 noon. Burial will continue at Sunset Memorial Park.

CMSgt Jack Melvin Thompson, US Air Force, Retired, departed this life on Nov. 20, 2010, at the age of 88. He was a long-time resident of Universal City, TX (since 1969). He served in the Air Force from 1942 until 1973. During his AF career, he was stationed in China as an advisor; England (where he met the aviator Charles Lindbergh); Okinawa (in support of the Korean action); March AFB, CA; Fuchu Air Station, Japan; Hickam AFB in Honolulu, Hawaii; Harlingen AFB in South Texas; and finally, Randolph AFB near San Antonio, TX. In 1969, he was sent on his final international assignment to Saigon, Vietnam. Upon his return to Texas in 1970, he served for two and a half years at Brooks AFB, San Antonio, before retiring in 1973.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Betty Jean; daughter Janis and husband Ronald Fielder; son Jon and wife Brenda; son Jimmy and wife Tricia; daughter Jill and husband Ronald Koerth; son Joe and wife Deanna. Jack also leaves behind twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Betty Jean Thompson Scholarship Fund at Universal City Baptist Church, 1401 Pat Booker, Universal City, TX 78148. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 29, 2010, at the Schertz Funeral Home (with visitation beginning at 11 am and the memorial service at 12 pm). A private Interment with Full Military Honors will be held in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:45 pm.

JAMES RUEL OWNBEY

JAMES RUEL OWNBEY
After surviving many battles during WWII, James Ruel Ownbey lost his final battle with cancer on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2010.

He proudly served in the USAF from 1940 until he retired in 1972. After fighting in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, he continued his service during the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife and the mother of his children, Peggy Ownbey.

He is survived by his three children: Jennifer Link, Jim and Rudy Ownbey, six grandchildren: JJ Link, Ashley Bryan, Tyler Ownbey, Erin Ownbey, Sara Anne and Megan Ownbey, two great-grandchildren: Katie and Courtney Link.

He will be buried with full military honors at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens at 2pm, Sunday, November 14, 2010. There will be no visitation.

The family requests that any donations be made to Cleveland Church of Christ.

MIKE HALE '66

J. Michael Hale, 62 passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 3 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Becky, children Adam and Lauren Hale of Houston, mother Gloria Hale of Schertz, sister Patti Hale and husband Ric, nephew Brandon Suehs and family, all of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mearl D. Hale.


Mike graduated with Honors from the University of Texas School of Architecture in 1977, and was currently employed by Fluor Corp. as Director of Architecture.


Mike served as helicopter crew chief for the U.S. Army from 1969-1972.


He was awarded the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross in field commendation ceremonies while in Vietnam.


Mike will be remembered for his quick wit and passion for excellence in all of his endeavors.

After a valiant battle with Medullary Thyroid Cancer, Mike passed away early Wednesday, November 3.

Bruce Donald McCall of Arlington peacefully began his eternal life Monday, July 26, 2010, at the age of 87. Service: 3:30 p.m. Friday in Moore Funeral Home Chapel, Arlington. Interment: With full military honors in Moore Memorial Gardens alongside his beloved wife, Dorothy, about whom he wrote, "...the one that has helped me the most in life has been that same girl that I fell in love with so many years ago. I thank the Lord for her..." And we thank the Lord for Bruce. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home. Memorials: Donations in his honor can be made to any local hospice. Bruce was born Oct. 25, 1922, in Pawnee, Okla., the youngest of five siblings. He spent his youth on his parents' farm and graduated from Oklahoma State University. Upon graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Irene Enslow, on Oct. 12, 1944, and started his family. After serving overseas in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, he attended Harvard School of Business, where he received his MBA in 1954. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1969 as a lieutenant colonel, he settled in Arlington where he worked for Bell Helicopter until he retired in 1985. He was an active member of Pantego Bible Church in Arlington, where he was a deacon and where he served the Lord he loved. In a letter telling of his life, he wrote, "I have always been sensitive to the Holy Spirit and His leadership in my life." Bruce's loved ones and friends were enriched by his kindness and compassion, by his easy-going temperament and light sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; brother, William; and sisters, Faye, Joy, Goldie and Hazel. Survivors: Children, Pamela S. Smith of Arlington, Ronald B. McCall and wife, Vicki, of Arlington, Patricia L. McCall of Raleigh and Dorene K. Foster and husband, Donald, of Burleson. He was blessed with six grandchildren who brought joy to his life: Jason M. Watkins and wife, Jessica, Jessica A. Smith, Lauren K. Wilson and husband, Jeff, Clint M. Foster, Jeff R. Foster and Madison N. McCall; and great-grandsons, Christian T. Smith and Landon F. Watkins.

Col. ROSS D. NORTON

Col. Ross D. Norton, USAF (Ret.), 93, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on October 29, 1916, in Green Forest, Arkansas, to Walter and Annie Norton. He graduated from Green Forest High School and left the family farm to seek his fortune. Ross enlisted in the US Army Air Forces in 1941, was later selected for Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. In 1944, he was stationed in England and, as fate would have it, was billeted "for one night only" in his future wife's family home. In December 1945 he married Joyce Mary; they would spend the next 63 years together, travelling the world, raising a family and retiring in San Antonio. A member of the Greatest Generation, his assignments included tours in the US, Europe, and Vietnam. Ross proudly served in the United States Air Force for 31 years, during which he received his BA from the University of Maryland. His distinguished career culminated with his return to England as the base commander at RAF Chicksands. His second career began with 10 years at USAA and continued with volunteer service through Windcrest Methodist Church, the Methodist Men's group and the Army Residence Community. Ross was predeceased by his brothers; Fred, Glenn, and Clyde. Survivors include his wife Joyce; sons, Michael and wife Kay, and Richard; daughters, Elizabeth and Susan; daughter-in-law Kathy; grandchildren, Christopher and wife Heather, Matthew and wife Kristina, Benjamin and wife Becky, and Jeffrey and wife Stacey; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Braylon, Cade, and Kaitlyn; a brother, Claude and wife Gladys. Ross (Dad) will be remembered as the loving patriarch of his extended family. He adored his wife, was quick to laugh, never forgot a face, gave the best hugs, and will live in our hearts always.

Vivian Rose Grieco passed away 8-31-10 at the Grand age of 89 peacefully and in the care of our Father.
I will miss her terribly but know that she lived a very full life and loved by many.

She was buried at Fort Sam Houston yesterday with my father and they are together again.

The inside of her card read a poem I had written many many years before that shares how her spirit stays with me and how we felt about each other.

Through all the years of growing up, you taught me what was right;
to stomp my feet, to beg and plead and get my way inspite.
You taught me how to laugh away the blues that haunt you daily.
To be as strong , some people say, as the lawyer F. Lee Bailey.
You always saved a special place for God and The Preamble.
But most of all, I recall,

Kathleen Collum Watkins

My mom passed away January 20. Her funeral will be on Tuesday, January 27 at 10 am at the Cook Walden Funeral Home at 6100 North Lamar, in Austin. She'll be buried at Ft Sam with my dad on Wednesday, January 28 at 1 pm. Her name was Kathleen Collum Watkins and the obituary will be in the Austin and San Antonio papers. Would appreciate your prayers for my family.

My mother in law Gerri Jendron's funeral is Saturday January 24 in South Carolina, so this has been a very difficult time for us.

DORIS SANDERS - RHS Secretary

GALVESTON — Doris Sanders passed away April 11, 2010, at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, just two months shy of celebrating the hundredth year of a life filled with love for family, friends, history, and travel.

If you wanted Doris to accompany you on a trip, you never had to ask her twice: her bag was packed and she was ready to head out the door. Her world adventures took her to almost every continent, including Australia at the young age of 92.

Doris Annette Dunham was born in Bowie, Texas, on June 18th, 1910. The hardships of two world wars, the Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression forged close bonds between Doris and her siblings, Jack, Perry, Jimmy, and Marie.

Doris married Carl Sanders and they had three children: Carl Jr., Larry, and Sandra. Doris was widowed at the early age of 42, and moved with her daughter to Port Lavaca, Texas, where she worked as an administrative secretary at Travis Middle School.

In 1962, Doris moved to Universal City, Texas, where she was a founding board member of the Universal City United Methodist Church. She worked as a secretary at Randolph High School and gained life-long friends who enjoyed traveling and hosting events like their annual Miss America viewing party.

In 1979, she married Homer Ruyle, a long-time family friend from Corpus Christi. After losing her second husband, she lived for many years in Universal City, and finally came to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bob Paul of Texas City, Texas. Doris attended the First United Methodist Church of Dickinson, and remained politically active: at age 98, she cast her vote and caucused for President Barack Obama.

Doris loved crochet and quilting, and volunteered for years at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio, introducing visitors to the artistry and friendship of quilting. Her love for family and friends were threads that connected cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, and she will be deeply missed by hundreds of friends and surviving family: Mary Dunham of Fort Worth, Texas; Carl and Lydia Sanders of Cibolo, Texas; Larry and Cindy Sanders of San Antonio, Texas; Sandra and Robert Paul of Texas City, Texas; Galloway and Mary Hudson of Houston, Texas; and Jane Sanders of Portland, Oregon.

Grandchildren: Jerri Lynn Sanders of Austin, Texas; Harold Sanders of Austin, Texas; Trey Sanders (d. 1998); Judy Sanders (d. 1998); Norman and Lisa Sanders of Huntingtown, Maryland; Jennifer and Andy Lorenz of Cypress, Texas; Mary Kay and Michael Higgins of Houston, Texas; Kendall Hudson (d. 2003); Kimberly and Blake Ingram of Sunnyvale, Texas; Geoffrey and Kjersti Sanders of Sandy, Oregon; Bobby and Ginger Paul of Alvin, Texas; Stephen and Allie Paul of Cypress, Texas; 14 great grandchildren.

As many years ago she decided to donate her body to the University of Texas Medical Branch for medical research, friends and family of Doris are invited to a memorial service honoring her life on Saturday, May 1, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Dickinson, 200 FM 517, Dickinson, Texas 77539.

The family requests donations in her memory to the Institute of Texan Cultures, Docent program, 801 E. Durango Blvd., San Antonio, TX, 78205, the Universal City United Methodist Church, or the First United Methodist Church of Dickinson.

Gerald A. Swindler - Coach

Gerald A. "Jerry" Swindler went home on March 19, 2010 at the age of 83. Affectionately called "Poppe" by his grandchildren, he was born November 18, 1926 in San Antonio. He graduated from Tech High School as a 4 year football letterman, and was a graduate of Hardin-Simmons Baptist University. During World War II he served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Marine Corp. His love of football later developed into a coaching and teaching career at several area high schools and middle schools, and he retired from Northeast Independent School District. He was an avid sportsman who also enjoyed golf, the Spurs, fishing on "Swindler Island" with his brother E.J. and hunting with his stepson Howard. He was a member of the San Antonio Optimist Club for many years and a member of the First Baptist Church in Castroville, Texas. Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Swindler, parents Edgar and Edwina Swindler, daughter Sheryl Swindler, and sister, Dorothy Tidwell. He is survived by children Susan Lillibridge and husband Greg, Sandra Metwally and husband Maher, Gerald Swindler, Jr., Sharlet Pardue, and Edgar Collins; stepchildren Lloyd Van Winkle, M .D. and wife Joanne, and Howard Van Winkle and wife Juana; brother E.J. Swindler; grandchildren Andy, Jake, Nate, Ben, Jesse, April, David, Christina, Sarah, Matthew, Jaclynn, Heather, Rudy, Megan, and Amanda; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family and friends. The family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice House for the excellent care they provided to Jerry. Visitation will be on Monday, Mar. 22, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, Mar. 23, 2010, 10:00 a.m. at Castroville First Baptist Church, Castroville, TX. Interment will follow at the Castroville Community Cemetery in Castroville, TX. DANNIE E. BALL 1928-2010

Master Sergeant (USAF, Retired) Dannie E. Ball, having fought the good fight and having kept the faith, finished his earthly course on 16 February 2010 and reported to his final duty station in Heaven. He was born in Lockland, Hamilton County, Ohio on 14 January 1928 and was the only child of James Elisha and Della Denham (Estep) Ball. On 7 September 1945, he and the love of his life Delores (Dee) Broughton crossed the Ohio River to be married in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky. They were married for more than sixty four years until his death. Besides his widow Delores, he leaves behind a son, Colonel (USAF, Retired) Gerald Dannie Ball, who resides in San Antonio with his wife Calla Jane (Gibson) Ball, and a daughter, Janet Elaine Valadez of Cibolo, widow of the late Jacob Cisneros Valadez. Other couples Dee and Dannie considered to be like their own children are Betty & David Sippel of Cibolo and Sandy & David Patrick of Seagoville. Dannie's love of God was reflected in his love of God's people. Besides his own children, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, numerous cousins, and others connected to him directly, he leaves many others who felt his love and support in times of need and of hope. Truly, he was a blessing to, and was blessed by, a remarkably extended family. Dannie served over twenty one years in the military, enlisting in the Army Air Forces when he turned 18 in 1946 and moving to the United States Air Force when it became a separate service in 1947. His Air Force career as an air traffic controller took him to duty stations in Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, England, Texas, Mississippi, Korea, Louisiana, Virginia, and Spain. After retiring from the Air Force in 1967 at Randolph Air Force Base, he began dramatically varied subsequent careers. First, he worked in the electronic security systems business in Waco. Then he was in wholesale agricultural sales in Dallas for almost thirty years. Dannie and Dee returned to the San Antonio area in 2000 where they became members of First Baptist Church of Universal City. Everywhere he went, he actively served the Lord in a local congregation. He taught Sunday School, was a Sunday School superintendent, served as a deacon, and filled in wherever the people of his church needed his skills and willingness to serve. He was also passionate about his avocation of flying model airplanes. He began with free-flight planes, then moved to U-control flying, and finally to radio controlled models for the last forty five years of his life. He met many lasting friends through model airplane flying. His 31 consecutive year string of flying radio controlled models every New Years Day ended this year when he was hospitalized. Visitation will be at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, Texas on Wednesday evening, 17 February, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Universal City at 12:30 on 18 February followed by burial with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston at 2:00 p.m.
