Col. Lawrence "Jack" Turnipseed, USAF



Col. Lawrence "Jack" Turnipseed, USAF (Ret), a resident of Air Force Village, San Antonio, TX passed away December 13, 2011. Born to Lawrence L. Turnipseed, Sr. and Annie Lou Mayhew on February 24, 1920 in Aliceville, Alabama, he was a long time resident of the Lake Travis, TX area. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Zelema (Zee), Daughter Carol Ann Haberle and her husband David of Jacksonville, TX, Son Larry Turnipseed and his wife Crystal of Lakeway, TX, Granddaughter May Ann Burnett of NY, NY, Grandsons Fred Haberle of Waco, Joshua Stark and Jared Turnipseed of Austin and Great Granddaughters Evie Burnett, Dylan and Holly Haberle. A member of the Army's 1st OCS class, he served with distinction in N. Africa, Sicily, Italy, Belgium, landed on Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and other numerous engagements before transitioning to the Air Force in 1947. He was very active in his church, instrumental in creating the Hudson Bend VFD and, as a member of the school board, led the effort that established the Lake Travis ISD. Col. Turnipseed is preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters and two brothers. He always had time and a kind word for anyone regardless of their station, lived his life with faith, honor, integrity and loved his family. A great old soldier has earned a peaceful corner of Heaven and his passing has left a hole that will never be filled. Visitation will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough, San Antonio, on Wednesday, December 21st from 6 pm to 8 pm. A memorial service will be held on December 22nd at Air Force Village I Chapel at 10 am. Graveside services will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on December 22nd at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers the family would like to suggest donations to the Chapel at Air Force Village I, National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.
